Today I start to flower my Grim Bastard OG along with a Gelato 33 and Tropicanna Cookies. It has taken a while to get to this point and you can read more about this strain’s genetics and my vegging process here: https://420grower.org/grim-bastard-og-solfire-gardens-biker-kush-x-black-banana-cookies-cross/
So before we start, a few things about this grow are in order. Lighting is an and a DIY 200w cob light. So total wattage is around 500 watts from the wall.
I use the full line of New Millenium Nutrients and top feed drip irrigation. Grow Stones are my media and there are 8 plants in one gallon pots. They are in a 2 x 4 flood tray with a 27 gallon reservoir.
There are 5 Grim Bastard OG, a Gelato 33 and two Tropicanna Cookies plants. So let’s get the show on the road and rock these girls!
Grim Bastard OG In Flower Day 0
Plants are being fed an additive that promotes earlier flowering, better stacking and also reduces stretch. It is used alone at transition from veg to flower for several days before switching to flowering nutes.
This is a Biker Kush from Karma Genetics crossed with a Black Banana male. The Black Banana male consists of Banana fire cookies x Orgn kids Black Berry Kush. Some of the Grim Bastard OG are showing a strong Black Berry Kush influence with purple/black coloring and unique wide leaves often 3 bladed and some singles too.
In addition there are 2 Tropicanna Cookies in this grow along with a Gelato #33 which is a selection from a cross of Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint GSC.
Grim Bastard OG Day 7 – HLG 550 Giveaway
Today is day 7 and my plants are showing flowers thanks to . I get flowers a week earlier when I run this at transition to 12/12 so I keep using it.
I removed a lot of leaves and branches this week. The Grim Bastard was started under 12/12 lighting to sex it earlier. I gave it a pretty good time under 24 hour lights and thought it had totally revegged.
But apparently it wanted to go another week and the result was crazy huge leaves and a shitload of tops. So most of the old leaves were removed and most of the branching.
I basically use a one node and flip method. So 4 main branches each with 4 nodes on them is what I shoot for. The video explains this.
I Just Won A HLG 550! Find Out How You Can Too!
I am pretty excited about this! I explain how you can win too in the video. The odds of winning are really pretty good. I never won anything in my life before. I am amazed that Grand Master Level and Horticulture Lighting Group are so generous that they give away 2 lights every month.
HLG 550 Quantum Board
In my opinion the HLG 550 is the best light for the money. It will replace a 1000w HPS and that is the truth. It is not my opinion but based on verified testing. Better light output, better spectrum, less heat and half the watts!
If you need a good light now and cant wait to win one you can check out the HLG 550 on Amazon
Grim Bastard OG Day 14 – LED VS HPS LIGHTING
Everything is doing well. Plants are continuing to stretch and a 2nd net was put on. The Grim Bastard OG is showing a lot of height difference between plants. One is very tall and one is very short with a few in the middle.
The Tropicanna is a heavy stretcher and the tallest. She can stretch 300% and are the tallest plants in there. Next is a pheno of Grim Bastard and then the Gelato 33.
I talk about HPS vs LED in the video too. If you are starting to grow wanting to run LED I recommend getting a good one. Either get a COB kit or a quantum board but stay away from cheap Chinese LEDs.If money is tight I recommend starting with HPS lighting.
As long as you can vent out the heat they will do a great job for you.
I would get a 1000w unit that is dimmable so you can run at 600 for a 3 x 3 or full power for a 4 x 4

Grim Bastard OG And Friends Day 21 Res Change?
How often do you change your nutes? I know some dump them every 2 weeks and some only top up.
Here is an article that details my nutrient change regimen https://420grower.org/changing-your-nutrient-reservoir/
Grim Bastard OG And Friends Day 28 Under HLG 550
Just added a new light. I replaced my HLG 300 and my 200w DIY COB light with a HLG 550 and the difference is very noticeable even though the overall wattage hasn’t changed much.
Loving this light and I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a new light. The was designed to replace a 1000w single ended HPS. This is not bullshit either.
GML ran 2 rooms one on HPS and one on HLG 550s. They were both around 25 lights each so this is not a 2 tent test and he is a very accomplished grower. He grew a strain he is very familiar with and even though the LED side was not fully dialed in it still outproduced the HPS side. Bud Porn Grim Bastard OG And Friends Day 35
Bud candy close ups taken day 35. Things are looking good. Starting to see some purple in the Tropicana. Forgive my ham handed attempt at videography LOL.
Day 42 Getting Ready To Flush
It is almost time to start flushing. I have lowered my nutrients from 1000 to around 600 ppms this week. Several of the Grim Bastard OG plants are starting to fade. Fans are turning yellow and some leaves are a lighter green now.
I will probably lower the ppms again to about 300 and start week seven with just plain water. I am still seeing white hairs so the plants are still active and can use up their stored nutrient reserves over the next few weeks.
Day 49 The Flush Is On
The flush is on and the fade is coming. These plants have been on plain water for most of the week. My tap water comes out at 30 ppm and my reservoir is at 50 so not much of anything left in the grow media.
For the next 2 weeks or so these ladies will have to draw on nutrients stored within the plant. Some are already showing yellow and purple leaves but there are some that are fading faster than others. Ideally by around day 60 they all should be done. They are sharing space with 2 other strains so finishing times may vary.
Tropicanna Cookies Day 50
This girl is in with the Grim Bastard OG and the Gelato and as usual she just shines. Leaves have gone from green to purple and buds are showing purple too. If you want to read more about her go here: https://420grower.org/tropicanna-cookies-by-oni-seed-company-grow-and-review/
Day 55 Flushing Grim Bastard OG
Day 57 Flushing Gelato #33 And Tropicanna Cookies
Flush has been going on for about 10 days now. I will probably continue until day 63 and then chop everything. Lots of purple showing up and lots of frost too. Pretty happy with the way things are going with this grow.
Day 60 Harvest Time
I was planning on taking everything to 63 days but things changed and my plants were done on day 60. I added a UVB bulb which is something I have been testing.
Beyond a doubt it sped up the finish. It also increased my trichome production and made everything very sticky. It is supposed to increase THC levels too, although without testing I cant verify this. After the first week many of the fan leaves had gotten to the point of being brittle. So I decided to harvest early. If you want to know more about UVB bulbs here is an article I wrote about it: https://420grower.org/reptisun-10-0-uvb-review/
Sometimes you never know what you have until it’s over. The Grim Bastard looked good, smelled good and made decent sized buds but for whatever reason it weighed out very light. So it is gone and I wont be growing it again.
The Gelato did well produced nice fruity buds with lots of purples. I felt it could be frostier and I thought it lacked potency too. Still she is worth a second chance to prove herself.
The Tropicanna did very well as usual. Her yields were up to par and I know this from growing her several times before. Nothing else in that closet even came close and because her yields were on point I know grower error was not a factor with the Grim Bastard OG. It is just a plant that makes nice buds but doesnt yield well .
